Steel Weight Calculator: Plate, Bar and Tube

The mass of a plate, flat bar, round bar, round tube or rectangular hollow section from its dimensions.

Calculated from standard textbook formulas, with every step shown. The formulas are fixed, so the working does not need checking: what matters is the numbers you type in. Use these calculators only if you are competent to choose the inputs (loads, material strength, dimensions, supports) and check your units and assumptions. For learning and checking your own working: design and sign-off are for a qualified engineer. Drafting Central does not store the numbers you type.

How this calculator works

Mass is volume times density. For a plate or flat bar the cross-section is thickness times width. For round bar it is π d² / 4. For a hollow section it is the outer area minus the inner area, with the wall thickness taken off each side.

Carbon steel is about 7850 kg/m³, stainless steel about 8000 and aluminium about 2700. Rolled sections have rounded corners and tolerances, so the supplier's mass per metre is the better figure for ordering.

Formulas used

  • m = \rho\,A\,L
  • A_{round} = \frac{\pi d^2}{4}
  • A_{hollow} = A_{outer} - A_{inner}

Worked example

With the default numbers in the calculator above:

  1. Cross-section area: 2000 mm²
  2. Mass per metre: 15.7 kg/m
  3. Mass of one piece: 94.2 kg
  4. Total mass: 94.2 kg

Common questions

What is the density of steel?

About 7850 kg/m³ for carbon steel.

Does it allow for rounded corners?

Yes. Square and rectangular hollow sections use rounded corners by default, which takes a few percent off the mass of a sharp-cornered section. You can choose sharp corners or type your own radius.

How do I find the mass of a plate in kilograms per square metre?

Multiply the thickness in millimetres by 7.85.
